Monseigneur Bourget Monument

Cultural Origin of Subject: Quebec

Located on the private property of the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral but overlooking the public spaces of Place du Canada and Dorchester Square, this 1903 monument commemorates the former Montreal bishop Ignace Bourget. The French Canadian bishop was an outspoken supporter of Quebec nationalism and was known for his bold decision to order the construction of the Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral in what was at the time the centre of Montreal’s English speaking Protestant community.
