Located in Place d’Youville, close to the site where Montreal's original settlement was
founded, this monument is intended to honor the history and early French settlers of the city. The monument was erected by the Société Historique de Montréal in 1894 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the city's original founding. On the north side of the obelisk lies a plaque that lists the names of the individual colonists that came between May and December of 1642. Rather than focusing on a particular leader like Chomeday or any other specific individual, this monument pays tributes to the collective group of Francophone settlers that came to the island and made Montreal one of the largest and most successful settlements in Quebec.
